Now We Know How the Forthcoming Toyota GR Supercar Sounds

Toyota GR GT3 Concept Debut 2022

We recently talked about Toyota teasing its forthcoming GR-branded supercar and its potential debut last Friday. Guess what? Toyota never showcased its halo car. However, they released some details about a new Century and a Corolla Concept, which, to my eyes, looks hilarious. Fast forward to this week, Toyota’s chairman, Akio Toyoda, along with a group of reporters from Toyota Times, revealed video footage that captures the exhaust note of this supercar.

Watch the embedded video above from 44:52, and you’ll first hear the exhaust note of Toyota’s first supercar, the 2000 GT. This will be followed by the buttery smooth V10 noises of the Lexus LFA and the roar of a crossplane V8 from this mystery supercar. Well, it’s not the first time we have listened to the exhaust of Toyota’s forthcoming supercar. Months of testing at the Nurburgring gave away the secret. However, this time, it’s in a controlled environment without any background noise.

Sure, the V8 sounds great, like all crossplane crank V8s. But if you listen closely, you’ll hear the ‘whoosh’ sound after the acceleration stops. It could be just me, but that happens in turbocharged engines. The blow-off valve (BOV) in a turbocharger releases excess pressurized air, creating that ‘whoosh’ sound.

So, from this video, we can confirm it’s a turbocharged V8 engine. It could be a twin-turbo setup or a single turbo with hybrid assistance, like we saw with Porsche’s T-Hybrid.

That said, this supercar will be a Toyota exclusive, unless the conglomerate decides to launch it Stateside under the Lexus branding. However, that would be odd, wouldn’t it? The last supercar was a Lexus, a name that’s known for luxury and performance. Whereas Toyota is seen as a more budget-friendly, highly reliable name in the car industry.

I guess that it won’t be a supercar like people are calling it. It’s a GT car, like the GR GT3 Concept from 2022, according to the spy shots. Of course, the Lexus LFA wouldn’t have been called a supercar if there were a less special engine under the hood, like a twin-turbo V8, and less carbon fiber.

We now have a confirmed date for this beast to debut—it’s December 4 at 9 PM Eastern Time. It will also be showcased for the first time at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2026. Till then, stay tuned for any updates on the Toyota GR supercar or the Lexus LFR —whatever you want to call this beast.
