Top 10 Classic American Muscle Cars

Best Muscle Cars

Perhaps one of the most exciting periods in automotive history was during the production years of the classic American muscle car.  Muscle cars were big, loud and ultra-powerful rubber burning machines.  During the 1960’s and 70’s the American automakers progressively became more competitive with their muscle car offerings. Each year it seemed Ford, Chevy, Chrysler or even AMC would out-do the competition in terms of brute power and aggressive exterior styling.  Since we love muscle cars we thought it would be fun to create a list of the all-time top 10 best muscle cars made on US soil.  Obviously this is merely our opinion so we don’t anticipate all readers to agree with the inclusion of all of the muscle cars on this list.  Since muscle cars are widely considered to have more than 2 seats; the Chevy Corvette, Shelby Cobra and other very powerful, fast cars from the era were omitted from this best muscle cars list.  Make sure to cast your vote on which of these you think is the greatest muscle car.  View a Complete List of Classic Muscle Cars.

Excellent post. Keep posting such kind of information on your blog.

  • Only 69 made. Hardly mass produced….

  • True, but those aren’t classics.

  • GNX is a V6, and doesn’t meet the strict definition of muscle car. Also not in the classic era. Superbird is listed up there, just under a different name. 😉 Same car though.

For me it will always be the CUDA Hemi of course, hardtop, convertible it doesn’t matter!

You left out one detail, a tuned Boss 429 was and is the fastest of the cars back then. Hell man I had a 67 427 side oiler Fairlane and put it on Hemi’s every Saturday and Sunday at the local strip. When Ford built the 427-SOHC, Chrysler and GM raised so much hell NASCAR wouldn’t consider letting it run. When they built the Boss 429 Chrysler said they would quit racing if it was allowed to keep running. Well made my 6 month visit. Gone for another 6 months.

  • Jaden Winchester

Not a muscle car, but one of the sexiest cars ive ever seen is the 1930 Bugatti type 41 royale. square body with the class of the thirties is just overkill.

  • April Veach

I will forever love 70 Chevy Chevelle SS454.

  • Donewithconservatives

I had a Chevelle SS 396 back in those days but i can tell you from first hand experience, and every one of those cars were there, the Hemi Cudas only real competition on Saturday nights were from Mopar 440 six packs. When the Hemis were running. They spent a lot of time out of tune, for one thing.

  • Louis Ramos

If my memory serves me correctly, nothing could touch a Hemi Cuda. But for looks, inside and out, my favorite was a 68 Shelby and a 70 Chevelle SS454
